What is an Eye Refraction?
A refraction test is an exam eye doctors use to determine the ideal correction of a refractive error. This tells your doctor exactly what prescription you need in your glasses.
Is this required?
If you would like to receive a glasses prescription at your visit, yes. Refraction is also a necessary part of a cataract evaluation. It is one of the most important parts of your eye exam and provides essential medical information. It is separate from the medical portion of your exam in which we check for other issues like glaucoma, retinal and other systemic diseases of the eye.
Why do I have to pay a refraction fee?
Unfortunately, the refraction is a NON-COVERED service by Medicare and most medical insurance plans. They consider refractions a “VISION” service and not a “MEDICAL” service. The refraction fee is collected at time of service. If you have any questions regarding your insurance coverage on refractions, please call your insurance directly.
